Decades of harsh sentencing laws, and the decrease in the use of parole/ clemency has created a “silver tsunami” that is rapidly approaching.

A reform of sentencing laws and release procedures are necessary to reduce “geriatric prisons” that pose no risk to public safety.

The number of men and women in state/federal prisons age 55 and older grew 76% between 1999 and 2008 according to “The Crime Report”.

According to the Department of Justice, 1% of people age 50 or older who are released return to prison.
